Safety alert: Doraville company recalls ice cream treats

Thousands of ice cream treats sold by Doraville company La Granja may be contaminated with salmonella, according to an alert from the U.S Food and Drug Administration. The company is recalling 4,000 of the mango-flavored ice cream treats, distributed in Georgia, Alabama and North and South Carolina, FDA says.

A routine sampling program by the U.S Department of Agriculture discovered the issue. So far, no illnesses have been reported. However, salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections. Most at risk at the very young, the very old, and people with weakened immune systems.

The iced treats have expiration dates of between Feb. 21-28, 2018.

FDA says consumers with questions about the recall can call the company at 770-263-1060.

Salmonella is estimated to cause a million food-borne illnesses a year in the United States. Those infected may develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
